The Incan Culture
The Inca were South American people that had an empire that stretched along the western boarder of South America where present day Ecuador and northern Chile are today. These people had existed for 300 years. The capital city of the Incas was Cuzco. Most people were farmers that produced food and clothing for themselves. The Incan people's main crops were corn, sweet potatoes, squash, and tomatoes. They domesticated guinea pigs, ducks, llamas, and dogs. Llamas were the Inca's beasts of burden. Llamas carried hundreds of pounds of rock on their backs. The Incas also used their hide as wool to make cloth and it was mostly used for ropes. The Incas were skilled craftsmen. The women could weave for days. They wove cloth into clothes for themselves. They knew how to get metal ore ny heating and melting it. The Incas spoke the Quechua language. The Incas also had musical instruments like the flute. The Incas could do some ancient construction work. They made suspension bridges over river valleys and mountain valleys. The Incas built a lot of walls to keep intruders out. These walls were over 7 meters high made of heavy stones. Some walls even still stand today. They built fortresses or temples out of the same stone as these walls. Every Incan person was assigned a very strict task in life, connected to age, gender, and social position. One example of this is that a child might carry water to the crops and water them. The Incans were one of the first civilizations to create social classes. The majority of the people were servants and and commoners.
